Gene therapy to correct disease and replace skin, saves Syrian boy

Hi Followers,

I’ve been a bit quiet over th last couple of week as I’ve been travelling.

Here is a feel-good gene editing story. This poor boy from Syria had a genetic disease that cause blisters over 80% of his body.

Small samples of his skin were exposed to an engineered virus, which corrected a faulty gene. The skin was then grown over scaffolds and, ultimately, layered back onto his body.

He has some scarring but is now cured! We’ve presumably had people born with deseases like this across the length of human history and now exponential technology has taken us to a point where we’re able to deliver a cure. Awesome.
